Ange Postecoglou’s side enjoyed the best chance of a cagey opening stages when Son teed up Rodrigo Bentancur for a shot which he blazed over.
The Uruguayan went closer with an effort that clipped the topside of Emiliano MartÃnez’s netting from a similar long-range distance.
Amadou Onana forced Villa’s first real opening with a header which cannoned off Guglielmo Vicario’s lefthand post from a Lucas Digne cross.
But the visitors broke the deadlock just minutes later as Morgan Rogers converted another Digne delivery, this time from a corner.
