4 things we learned about Liverpool in August

Despite not doing a whole lot of business during the 2024 summer transfer window, the Arne Slot era at Liverpool has gotten off to a flying start.

With three wins from three games and zero goals conceded, the Reds have been genuinely fantastic thus far, with their statement win over Manchester United at Old Trafford the highlight of a highly positive month for the club.

Here are the four biggest takeaways from Liverpool’s performance in August.

There are two teams who have won all three of the Premier League games thus far this season.

One is obviously Manchester City and the other is Liverpool.

The Reds have done so in impressive fashion too, beating Ipswich Town, Brentford and Manchester United without conceding a single goal.

It’s early days, sure, but they look like genuine title contenders once again this season.

2. Arne Slot’s tactics are a hit

That fine form has in large part been down to the tactical brilliance of new manager Arne Slot.

The former Feyenoord boss has got the Reds fans on side early in his tenure thanks to his ability to get the best out of his attacking options while making the team rock solid defensively.

He’s done so through an expansive and malleable 4-2-3-1 formation, which has been tinkered with slightly from game to game to exploit opposition weaknesses. This was seen when Slot pushed his wingers high up the flanks in order to expose Man Utd’s defensive frailties out wide.

Having watched Cody Gakpo absolutely tear it up during Euro 2024, many were expecting the Dutch forward to make the left wing berth at Liverpool his own under Slot.

Rather surprisingly, that hasn’t been the case.

Instead, Slot has trusted Luis Diaz to play on the left flank and, so far, it’s proved to be a masterstroke.

The Colombian was exceptional in Liverpool’s first three games of the season, pressing hard off the ball and providing quality when on it, too – bagging four goal contributions so far.

If Diaz continues this form, it’s hard to imagine Gakpo ever getting a look in under Slot.

After a major fallout with Jurgen Klopp and some patchy form at the end of the 2023/24 season, Mohamed Salah’s Liverpool career looked to be winding down.

Three weeks into the 2024/25 campaign, that fallout and dip in form is a distant, distant memory.

Salah has been back to his very best in recent weeks, netting a rather stunning three goals and three assists in August alone.

There are very, very few players better than the Egyptian star when he’s in this sort of form.
