Former Red Wings Forward Done For Season

Date:

Injuries are a part of life and a part of hockey.

The Detroit Red Wings have been lucky so far this year. No vital player has been out for any consequential period.

That is not the case for a former Red Wings player.

Anthony Mantha signed a one-year deal with the Calgary Flames on July 1st. Now, he is going to spend the rest of the year injured.

It’s a tragic end to a promising season.

Mantha is no stranger to injuries. Aside from an 80-game campaign in the 2017-18 season, he hasn’t played a full 82-game season. The only time he played a full year was the 2020-21 season, which was shortened to 56 due to massive worldwide concerns about the COVID-19 pandemic.

According to a press release, Mantha will have surgery on his ACL on Thursday.

In 13 games this year, he produced seven points while averaging only 13:54 of time on ice per game. On July 1st, he signed a contract for $3.5 million.

Since leaving the Red Wings during the 2020-21 season, he hasn’t been able to replicate his early career success. He posted back-to-back 48-point seasons in 2017-18 and 2018-19, scoring 24 and 25 goals, respectively.

He came close last year. In 2023-24 he split time between the Washington Capitals and Vegas Golden Knights. He scored 44 points, including 23 goals.

We hope nothing but the best for Mantha as he recovers from this frustrating injury and ends his season.
