Women’s Basketball Topples Chowan in Home Opener – William & Mary Athletics

Date:

WILLIAMSBURG, Va.—After sprinting out to a 29-6 first quarter lead, the William & Mary women’s basketball team coasted to a 66-42 win over Chowan on Thursday night at Kaplan Arena.

The win was the first of the season for the Tribe as they opened their home schedule against the Division II Hawks.

Early buckets aided the Tribe to a 6-2 lead before sprinting out to a mammoth 23-4 run over the quarter’s final 8:41.

Monet Dace and Rebekah Frisby-Smith each knocked down triples to kickstart the run, with Bella Nascimento converting a 3-point-play and Kayla Beckwith adding a layup.

Frisby-Smith added another trey with 1:24 in the quarter to cap off the spurt for the Tribe as they led 29-6 after 10 minutes.

W&M (1-3, 0-0 CAA) shot 10-for-21 from the floor while holding the Hawks to 3-of-19 in the first quarter.

Two free throws from Natalie Fox made it 31-9 30 seconds into the second frame. That lead would expand to 25 later, when Anahi-Lee Cauley scored four straight to put the hosts up 40-15.

Chowan would score four of the last six points in the half and W&M took a 42-19 lead to the break.

The Green and Gold started the third with a 6-0 spurt to grab a 48-19 less than a minute into the frame.

W&M’s lead would swell to 36, its largest of the night, after a Dance 3-pointer made it 57-21 with 4:22 to play. The quarter would end with the Tribe comfortably up 62-33.

The fourth was highlighted by both teams struggling offensively, but the Tribe would still cruise across the finish line for a 66-42 victory.

Nascimento led three Tribe players in double-figures with 11 on the evening as Beckwith and Cauley each chipped in 10.

Fox led W&M on the glass with seven boards. Cassidy Geddes and Dance each had three assists to lead the Tribe.
