Barcelona midfielder is not ‘feeling the same as before’ after returning to national team duty

Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong has taken a significant step in his recovery journey, returning to action with the Dutch national team after an extended period on the sidelines.

His comeback marks an important milestone following an ankle injury that had kept him out of competitive football for months.

De Jong’s absence was felt deeply, as he had not featured for the Netherlands in over a year, leaving both club and country awaiting his return.

“I haven’t played for a long time, I’m happy to be back,” he said after Netherlands’ 4-0 win over Hungary as quoted by SPORT.

Challenges along the way

The Barcelona player acknowledged the challenges he still faces in getting back to his best. While he has resumed playing, he admitted to experiencing occasional discomfort in his ankle.

These lingering issues have slightly affected his confidence on the pitch, as he adjusts to the demands of high-level football again. De Jong is aware that regaining his rhythm and sharpness will require consistent game time.

“I’m not saying it’s a risk, but the feeling is not the same as before. It should improve from now on,” he admitted.

Despite his determination, De Jong revealed that he will not start the Netherlands’ next match, choosing to take a cautious approach to his reintegration.

He will, however, stay with the national team to continue his rehabilitation and contribute in a limited capacity if needed. “I will stay with the national team, but I will not start the next game.”

One step at a time

Interestingly, Dutch coach Ronald Koeman seems to share this patient approach, keen to ensure that De Jong is fully fit before placing heavier demands on him.

For both Barcelona and the Netherlands, De Jong’s return is a source of optimism. Although he is not yet at his peak, his presence on the pitch signals progress.

Barcelona manager Hansi Flick has continued to place his trust in the Dutch midfielder, recognising his importance to the team’s tactical setup.

De Jong’s 68-minute performance during his comeback game is a promising sign that he is on track to reclaim his influential role.
