Patrick Mahomes: I pride myself on playing through pain

Date:

The week leading up to Saturday’s game against the Texans involved questions about how effective Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes would be playing through an ankle injury and it didn’t take long to get an answer.

Mahomes capped the first Chiefs possession of the afternoon with a 15-yard touchdown run. Mahomes said he didn’t feel like he was “setting a tone” with the play but it served that purpose as the Chiefs went on for a 27-19 win that puts them on the verge of clinching the first overall seed in the AFC playoffs.

After the win, Mahomes said he takes a lot of pride in being able to persevere when he isn’t feeling 100 percent.

“I ask a lot from the guys around me and, so, I feel like if I’m going to ask them to play through pain, if I’m going to ask them to play through little nicks and bruises and stuff like that, I’ve got to do it,” Mahomes said. “That’s something that I pride myself on, is being out there with my guys and playing football. I’m not going to put us in a position to be in a bad spot or lose a football game, but if I feel like I can compete and win, I’ll be out on that football field.”

Mahomes will manage the ankle between now and Wednesday’s game against the Steelers. A win in that game or a Bills loss to the Patriots on Sunday will make them the No. 1 seed.
