Senators unveil plan to regulate AI, as companies race ahead

Date:

A bipartisan group of senators on Wednesday published a sprawling list of recommendations to regulate artificial intelligence — the same week that Silicon Valley companies unveiled a swell of new products intended to further entrench the technology in consumers’ lives.

Senate Majority Leader Charles E. Schumer and other key lawmakers have spent much of the past year hashing out the 31-page “road map,” which calls for a $32 billion infusion of federal spending in AI research and development. It also calls congressional committees to develop legislation that would create evaluations for AI harms, protect elections and address risks that AI poses to sectors such as health care and housing.
