SLU recruits Washington U professor to lead business school

Date:

ST. LOUIS — St. Louis University officials announced Thursday that they have recruited a longtime Washington University professor to serve as dean of the business school.

Jackson Nickerson will begin in the new role on July 1. His academic background is in leadership and strategy. He will succeed Barnali Gupta, who has held the position since 2021.

“I am thrilled and honored to serve the Chaifetz School of Business, St. Louis University, and the St. Louis region, my home for 22 years,” Nickerson said in a statement.

Nickerson received a bachelor’s degree from the Worcester Polytechnic Institute and a master’s degree from the University of California Berkeley — both in mechanical engineering. Before pursuing a career in academia, Nickerson was a control systems engineer in NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory.

He went on to receive an MBA from U.C. Berkeley, and then a doctorate in business and public policy.

In the early 2000s, Nickerson was part of a project studying management at a few dozen pharmaceutical manufacturing facilities, according to his curriculum vitae. The researchers’ findings led to changes in policy at the Food and Drug Administration.

Nickerson was hired as an assistant professor at Washington University’s business school in 1996. From 2009 to 2017, he served as associate dean and director of Brookings Executive Education at the university and the Brookings Institute.

Nickerson has published six books and more than 85 journal articles and case studies.
