Gauff, ranked No. 2 in the world, is appearing in her first Olympics. She planned to compete at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021 before she tested positive for the coronavirus, forcing her to withdraw.
“I never thought in a million years I would have the honor of carrying the American flag for Team USA,” Gauff said in a statement. “I could not be more proud to lead my teammates with LeBron as we showcase our dedication and passion on the biggest stage there is — at a moment where we can bring athletes and fans together from around the world.”
Gauff and James earned the honors by a vote of U.S. Olympians in a process overseen by the Team USA Athletes’ Commission. Fellow American tennis player Chris Eubanks nominated Gauff.
“I’m incredibly proud of Coco — I know how great she is as a tennis player but more importantly how great she is as a person,” Eubanks said. “I don’t think there is anyone more deserving of this honor.”
Gauff has won seven singles titles, most notably the 2023 U.S. Open, along with nine doubles titles, including this year’s French Open. Gauff began her ascent to the top of tennis when she reached the fourth round of Wimbledon as a 15-year-old in 2019.
“To be nominated by your teammates for this honor speaks volumes about the way in which Coco approaches her sport and her role as a member of Team USA,” U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee CEO Sarah Hirshland said. “I’m thrilled for her to start her Olympic journey here in Paris and, with LeBron, to lead Team USA and inspire fans around [the] United States and the world.”
