NORTON, Massachusetts — Dover High School senior Carys Fennessy competed in her first LPGA event on Thursday, shooting a 6-over par 78 in the first round of the FM Global Championship at TPC Boston.
The top 65 scores and ties after Friday’s round will make the cut and advance to weekend play. When she finished her round, Fennessy was tied for 134th in the 144-person field. Fennessy is scheduled to tee off at 2:05 p.m. in Friday’s second round. Fennessy is one of three amateurs in the tournament.
On the day, Fennessy had two birdies, 10 pars, four bogeys and two double-bogeys. She shot a 1-over par 37 on the front-nine, and 5-over par 41 on the back. Fennessy played with Sophia Schubert and Laura Wearn, both professionals. Schubert shot a 2-over 74, and Wearn carded a 5-over 77.

Fennessy started her day on the back nine, and promptly birdied the par-4 10th hole. After a bogey on the par-5 12th hole, Fennessy rolled three straight pars going into the par-3 16th hole at even par.
Fennessy then bogeyed the 16th, had double bogeys on 17 and 18, and started her back nine with a bogey on the par-4 first hole; a plus-6 on a four-hole stretch. Fennessy had birdies on the par-3 third hole, and par-4, 10th.
How Fennessy qualified for LPGA Tour event
Fennessy earned a spot in the tournament after carding a winning score of 1-under 71 in Monday’s qualifier at TPC Boston. In Monday’s qualifier, Fennessy bested an 11-player field, featuring nine professionals and one other amateur.
She reached Monday’s qualifier after placing second in last Wednesday’s Mass Golf Invitational Qualifier at Worcester Country Club. Ten amateur golfers were invited to compete in the qualifier with the top two scores advancing to Monday’s qualifier at TPC.
Fennessy survived two playoff holes and earned the second-and-final spot.
It’s been a busy summer for Fennessy. Earlier this month she won her second straight New Hampshire Women’s Amateur championship by 18 strokes at Rochester Country Club. And in July, she won the 2024 New England Women’s Amateur golf championship at Samoset Resort Golf Club in Rockport, Maine.
Last fall, she won her third straight New Hampshire high school state championship.
