Alexei Popyrin reacts to shock US Open win against ‘greatest of all time’ Novak Djokovic

Date:

Alexei Popyrin detailed the “unbelievable” feeling of beating Novak Djokovic to reach the fourth round of the US Open.

Popyrin won 6-4 6-4 2-6 6-4 in their Friday night clash (30 August), sending the defending champion home in a shock result.

Defeat for Djokovic means it is the first time since 2017 he has not won a grand slam title and is his earliest exit at a major since the Australian Open that year.

“It’s unbelievable because I’ve been in the third round about 15 times in my career, but I haven’t been able to get past into the fourth round,” Popyrin said after his win.

“To be able to do it against the greatest of all time… it’s a great feeling.”
