College football Week 1 scores, updates: No. 7 Notre Dame tops No. 20 Texas A&M in back-and-forth battle

Date:

Labor Day weekend means college football has officially arrived.

No. 1 Georgia got things started with an absolute show of force, blasting No. 14 Clemson 34-3 in their season opener. Heisman favorite Carson Beck was on point throughout the marquee showdown, throwing for 278 yards and two touchdowns in the win.

No. 19 Miami handled in-state rival Florida in the afternoon window as new QB Cam Ward threw for 385 yards and three touchdowns in his Miami debut.

Elsewhere, No. 4 Texas and No. 8 Penn State both took care of business. Arch Manning tallied the first touchdowns of his career in cleanup duty as the Longhorns rolled Colorado State and PSU QB Drew Allar looked very comfortable in the Nittany Lions’ new offense in a win over West Virginia.

In the late game, No. 7 Notre Dame stood tall in a heavyweight fight with No. 20 Texas A&M and pulled away for a 23-13 win. The two teams traded blows throughout before the Irish broke the tie late with their rushing attack and a stringent defense.
