Mount Aloysius golf team sets two records in 2024 opener

Date:

DOVER, Ohio – The Mount Aloysius College men’s golf team opened its season in a memorable way at the Gatorade Collegiate this past weekend.

The Mounties got quality golf out of quite a few newcomers on their way to setting the program record for both single-round and two-day totals.

Mount Aloysius finished second overall, just four strokes behind Wooster. The Scots shot 289-297 for a two-day total of 586, which was 10-over par. The Mounties shot 290-300, for a 14-over par, 590.

The 590 was a school record for two-day tournament total and in relation to par. Mount Aloysius finished just ahead of Mount Union, which shot 592.

Mount Aloysius newcomers Josh Nicholl and Michael Sevier each shot 145 for the two days, landing them in a tie for second place individually. Mount Union’s Brian Myers took home medalist honors with a two-day total of 139.

Nicholl made his debut with a two-under par score of 70 Saturday, before carding a 75 in Sunday’s round. Sevier posted similar scores, with a 71 on Day 1 and a 74 on Day 2. The two now share the program record for lowest individual total in a two-day tournament.

The Mounties shot a two-over par 290 Saturday, which left them one shot behind the Scots after the first day. The score of 290 was the program’s lowest single-round total in school history, both overall and in relation to par. They followed that up with a 300 Sunday, falling just short of the team title.

In addition to Nicholl and Sevier, Mount Aloysius got great performances from Ethan Batstone and Viktor Cussil. Batstone, who shot 75-73-148, finished in a tie for 10th place overall. Cussill also landed in the 70s for both rounds, shooting 75-78, for a 153.

Mount Aloysius had two teams competing in the event, with the B Team finishing in ninth place. Landon Smith led the second group with a 158, after posting a low score of 73 Sunday. He finished in 38th place individually.

The Mounties will return to action Friday and Saturday in the Mountain Valley Collegiate Classic, co-hosted by Mount Aloysius and Penn State Altoona. Friday’s round will take place at Sinking Valley Country Club and Saturday’s round at the Mounties’ home course, Summit Country Club in Cresson.
