Real Madrid’s ongoing injury issues are likely to compel manager Carlo Ancelotti to adjust his defensive strategies.
With key players like David Alaba, Eder Militao, and Aurelien Tchouameni sidelined for the upcoming clash against Real Sociedad, Dani Carvajal might unexpectedly step up as a vital player for the Italian coach.
It must be noted that last season, Carvajal was asked to play in a central defensive role during two consecutive league matches at the Santiago Bernabeu.
Carvajal has plenty of experience
Carvajal’s experience in the centre-back position goes back to the 2021-22 Champions League semi-final against Chelsea. In extra time of the second leg, with only minutes remaining, Carvajal replaced Nacho after all substitutions had been exhausted.
Alongside Alaba, he reinforced the defence, helping to hold off Chelsea’s attacking threats. His performance was commendable, as he and Jesus Vallejo successfully defended against Manchester City in the semi-final second leg, once again in extra time.
In the derby against Atletico Madrid, he partnered with Nacho as a right centre-back. Later, in a crucial match against Girona, where both teams were battling for top spots in the league, he teamed up with Tchouameni in central defence.
This was particularly challenging as both Militao and Alaba were injured. Militao had been out since the opening match of the season, and Alaba was injured in November. Rudiger also suffered an injury in the match against Getafe, leaving the team further depleted.
Moreover, Tchouameni was suspended for one match due to a booking in the Getafe game. Despite the setback, Carvajal and Nacho managed to defend well in the 1-1 draw against Atletico.
In the match against Girona, Carvajal was paired with Tchouameni, as Nacho was unavailable due to a muscle injury. Madrid secured a dominant win, with Camavinga’s excellent performance shielding the defence and Lunin achieving a clean sheet.
Should Ancelotti need to rely on Carvajal in a central role again, there is confidence in his ability to deliver top-notch performances. The club captain consistently rises to the occasion, demonstrating his versatility and reliability on the pitch.
