Texas Tech basketball hosting 5-star wing in the class of 2025

Date:

The Texas Tech basketball program is about two months away from tipping off its season. However, the program has a huge weekend ahead of itself over the next two days.

That’s because head coach Grant McCasland and his staff are currently hosting one of the top high school prospects in the nation. Shelton Henderson, a five-star forward from Bellaire, Texas is currently on campus to see what Texas Tech and Lubbock have to offer.

To say that this is a massive opportunity for the Red Raiders would be an understatement. Henderson is rated by 247Sports.com’s composite rankings as the No. 22 player overall and No. 4 small forward in the country for the class of 2025.

The 6-foot-6, 220-pounder is one of the most coveted prospects in the nation. In addition to Texas Tech, he holds offers from the likes of Duke, Texas, Louisville, Houston, LSU, Oklahoma State, Ole Miss, TCU, Texas A&M, and others.

In August, Henderson visited Louisville and later this month he’s set to visit Duke and Texas (according to 247Sports.com). Thus, Tech has some tough competition in this recruiting battle.

In early August, Henderson released his top six schools and Tech made the cut along with Louisville, LSU, Houston, Texas, and Duke. So the fact that he’s on campus this weekend is no surprise.

Certainly, Tech will do all it can to reel in this massive fish. Currently, Tech has no recruits committed for the 2025 class.

However, if Henderson does decide to become a Red Raider, he’ll make history as the highest-ranked recruit in program history. Right now, that honor still belongs to Jahmi’us Ramsey who was the No. 32 overall player and a 4-star prospect in the class of 2019.

The current Texas Tech basketball roster includes four guards/forwards who will be seniors this season. Therefore, adding to the roster at the wing position will be an offseason priority next summer. While the transfer portal will undoubtedly play a role, if Tech can find a way to bring Henderson into the fold, it will go a long way toward securing the future of the program.
