VP nominee JD Vance is coming to Charlotte. Heavy rush-hour backups possible.

Date:

Charlotte drivers should brace for rush-hour backups heavier than usual Monday afternoon when Vice Presidential nominee J.D. Vance speaks at a campaign rally.

Vance is scheduled to address supporters at 5 p.m. in the Dale F. Halton Theater, 1206 Elizabeth Ave., Donald Trump’s presidential campaign announced Friday.

Doors open at 3 p.m. Free tickets are available on Trump’s campaign website, event.DonaldJTrump.com.

When Trump addressed the Fraternal Order of Police’s National Board of Trustees in Charlotte on Sept. 6, police closed stretches of Interstate 85 for hours.

As of Saturday, police had announced no such closings for Vance’s visit and didn’t say where they expect traffic to be heaviest. It’s a safe bet backups could be worst around Charlotte-Douglas International Airport and the Central Piedmont Community College campus.

Vance’s visit again highlights the increasing attention on North Carolina as the election nears. Trump had a clear lead in the state before President Joe Biden dropped out and endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris. Since then, most polls show that the state has become an important tossup.

In Charlotte, Vance will address the economy, his campaign said.

Republicans are reeling from a CNN report that Mark Robinson, the GOP nominee for N.C. governor, made racist, antisemitic and sexual comments on a porn forum, McClatchy News reported. Robinson has denied making the remarks.
