Former Barcelona superstar insists Vinicius deserves to win the Ballon d’Or

Speaking to Brazilian television channel Band Sports (h/t MARCA), former Barcelona superstar Neymar has backed Real Madrid forward and fellow Brazilian Vinicius Jr. to win the Ballon d’Or this year.

The 24-year-old Real Madrid rising superstar enjoyed a spectacular last season, playing an integral part as the Merengues won the La Liga and the UEFA Champions League titles.

Vinicius has been touted as the favourite to win the Golden Orb after his brilliant contributions, although he faces competition from fellow Real Madrid stars Dani Carvajal and Jude Bellingham as well as Manchester City’s Rodri.

But reports earlier today suggested that Vinicius has won the Ballon d’Or and has been informed about it already.

Now, Neymar has come out and spoken in support of his compatriot, stating that the Real Madrid attacker is very much deserving of the biggest individual honour in football.

“Of course, I will be rooting for him to win the Ballon d’Or this year. For me there is no other better candidate to win,” Neymar said.

Continuing, the Al-Hilal forward added: “He’s a guy who deserves it, because he’s a fighter. He has suffered a lot throughout his life, but he has surpassed all expectations and criticism.”

Neymar further stated that Vinicius “has become an idol for everyone here.”

Sergio Aguero agrees

Meanwhile, another former Barcelona forward, Sergio Aguero, also agreed that Vinicius deserved to win the Ballon d’Or while also stating that the Brazilian has been better than his new teammate Kylian Mbappe in recent times.

“This season Vinicius was better than Mbappé. He is a player who generates danger. If Vinicius has the ball you feel there is danger,” said the ex-Man City attacker.

“I prefer Vinicius to win the Ballon d’Or. This year he has been far superior,” he concluded.
