Southern tennis wins Senior Day match

Date:

Sep. 26—Southern Lee tennis celebrated Senior Day with a win Tuesday afternoon, putting all of the team’s seniors into the lineup and pulling out two of the three doubles matches to score a 5-4 win over Hoke County.

The Lady Cavaliers (5-3 overall and in conference) scored the usual easy win at the top of the lineup courtesy of top-seed Genesis Gonzalez, and scored two other decisive wins in the singles at No. 2, where Logan Hickman downed Hera Lin 8-1, and at No. 6, where Lilli McLeod downed Dara Khantivong by the same score.

Gonzales bageled Laura Pena-Laverde 8-0 in singles and then teamed with Hickman to post that score against the Bucks’ top doubles team of Pena-Laverde and Kalea Parker. In the other three singles matches, Fa’alenton Lin defeated Brooke Burrus (3) 8-4; Parker edged Gina DeCerbo (4) 9-7; and Azari McLean topped Cameron Collins (5) 8-2. These results left the match dead even going to the doubles.

The Lady Cavaliers picked up the expected win at the top of the order, but needed one more to get the team victory. Burris and Quillen Petrarca delivered that at No. 2 doubles, prevailing 8-4. Hoke earned one more point when McLean and Khantivong defeated Julie Slavik and Lexie Martinez 8-5 at No. 3 doubles.

Southern was scheduled to play Wednesday at Chatham Central, but this match may not have been played due to the weather. The Lady Cavaliers will play at Union Pines Tuesday evening.
