One of Georgia basketball’s transfer additions is ineligible for the first nine games of the season.

De’Shayne Montgomery, a 6-foot-5 guard from Mount St. Mary’s, won’t be able to make his Bulldogs debut until the Dec. 14 game against Grand Canyon in Atlanta. The first nine games runs through the end of the university’s first semester.

Montgomery did not have enough transferrable credits to be eligible to play for the Bulldogs this semester. He’s one of nine newcomers including five transfers.

“Since he arrived on campus, De’Shayne has worked hard, been a model teammate and done everything we have asked him to do,” coach Mike White said in a statement through a team spokesman. “I fully expect him to continue to make positive contributions to our program until he is eligible to play.”

UGASports was the first to report Montgomery’s status.

Montgomery averaged 13.2 points, 3.5 rebounds and 2 assists last season when he was named the MAAC Rookie of the Year.

He was one of two players made available to speak to reporters this past Monday.

White was asked before preseason practices about Montgomery and former Mount St. Mary’s teammate Dakota Leffew who also transferred to Georgia.

“They’ve got their hands full with some other really good guards and some experienced guards, too,” he said. “I say that, and our whole league’s got a lot of those really good guards and experienced guards, but I do feel like our backcourt will be as good as it’s been since we’ve been here.”
