Three charged following assault at CPL cricket match in Guyana | Loop Caribbean News

A recent disturbing incident at a Caribbean Premier League (CPL) cricket match, has resulted in three individuals being charged with assault.

The altercation, which was captured on camera and subsequently went viral, occurred during the September 25match between Guyana Amazon Warriors and Barbados Royals at the Guyana National Stadium in Providence.

The Guyana Police Force described the incident as an “unfortunate” event involving “brawling and uncouth behaviour.”

According to reports, “a spectator, who was reportedly under the influence of alcohol, was seen being stomped on by several men as he lay on the ground.” The victim was taken to the hospital for treatment and later released.

In response to the incident, authorities have taken swift action. “Three persons were charged today for Assault relative to their brawling and uncouth behaviour (as seen in a viral video),” the police statement confirmed.

The charges were filed on September 27 following medical examinations and arrests.

The three individuals charged are Sereste Brittlebank, 28, from Coldingen, East Coast Demerara, who is charged with “Assault Peace Officer”; Keron Williams, 29, from Annadale, ECD, charged with “Assault Causing Actual Bodily Harm”; and Trevon Williams, 31, also from Annadale, ECD, charged with “Assault Causing Actual Bodily Harm.”

All three defendants appeared before Magistrate Dylon Bess at the Diamond Magistrate Court #3 and pleaded ‘not guilty’ to the charges.

Williams and Brittlebank were released on $20,000 and $80,000 bail, respectively, while Williams was released on $60,000 bail.

The case has been adjourned until October 3, 2024, for trial.

In light of this incident, the Guyana Police Force has announced enhanced security measures for future matches. “There will be stringent security measures and beefed-up Police presence (uniform and plain clothes) at the Guyana National Stadium for the remainder of the CPL matches in Guyana,” the statement assured.

While noting that “the required security posture was in place at the stadium (both inside and around the perimeter),” they emphasized that “additional measures will be in place to mitigate against any recurrence.”
