Providence basketball will take the national stage this season. Here’s the Friars schedule

Date:

Three major networks and multiple national cable outlets will carry Providence College men’s basketball games in the 2024-25 season.

CBS, Fox and NBC will feature at least a combined four games in Big East play — two against former coaches, two against the two-time national champions. The Friars could also see their regular-season finale flexed from FS1 to Fox if it helps determine a league title.

St. John’s, Georgetown and a pair of matchups with Connecticut will be played under the brightest lights. The Red Storm visit Amica Mutual Pavilion for an 8 p.m. tip on Dec. 20 and the Hoyas come calling for a 12:30 p.m. tip on Jan. 25. Both of those games will be shown on Fox. Rick Pitino and Ed Cooley will make their respective returns to the sidelines they called home from 1985-87 and 2011-23, respectively.

Providence travels to face the Huskies at Gampel Pavilion on Jan. 5 at 2 p.m. and hosts them on March 1 at noon. Those games will be aired with new media rights partner NBC and CBS. It’s the first time in program history it’ll be playing games on each of those three networks in a single season and the first time since 1997-98 playing on NBC outlets. The Friars will add the TNT Sports family of networks to the mix when the conference’s new six-year deal with three major stakeholders — Fox Sports, NBC Sports and TNT Sports — begins in the 2025-26 season.

Providence could add one more conference game on a national network on March 8. The Friars will visit Xavier at a tip time to be determined. That game will air either on Fox or FS1 — the smaller outlet, along with partner FS2, will show 14 of the team’s 31 contests this season.

ESPN’s family of networks will air at least three games for the Friars during the Battle 4 Atlantis. Providence will open the Thanksgiving tournament on Nov. 27 in the Bahamas with a 5 p.m. tip against Oklahoma on ESPN2. The Friars will play either Arizona or Davidson in their next game and a third opponent to be determined, with those games airing on either ESPN or ESPN2.

CBS Sports Network will carry four Providence games, including a Dec. 7 contest against an old rival. The Friars will visit the University of Rhode Island at the Ryan Center at a time to be determined. Providence’s meeting with another Atlantic 10 foe can also be seen on the network, as the Friars battle St. Bonaventure at Mohegan Sun in a 5 p.m. tip on Dec. 14.

NBC’s streaming service, Peacock, will pick up four Providence conference games this season beginning with a Jan. 8 home date against Butler at 8:30 p.m. The Friars play consecutive games the following month on Peacock, visiting the Bulldogs for a 3 p.m. tip on Feb. 8 and hosting Xavier for an 8 p.m. start on Feb. 12. Each of Providence’s last six games following the Musketeers will be aired on traditional networks or cable outlets.

The Friars open with an Oct. 26 home exhibition game against Massachusetts at 4 p.m. Providence is coming off a 21-14 season and a berth in the NIT. Devin Carter was the Big East Player of the Year and an NBA lottery pick, leading the way in occasionally spectacular fashion after Bryce Hopkins suffered a major left knee injury in early January.
