LISTEN: Mets, Brewers radio calls of Pete Alonso’s ninth-inning home run

Date:

For three decades, Howie Rose has been the voice of some great Mets moments but now he can add Thursday night’s Game 3 win against the Brewers as one of them.

When Pete Alonso came up to the bat with his down 2-0, Rose was getting amped. The Mets had just put runners on the corners with no outs, and Alonso had a chance to do some damage. Even better, the slugging first baseman worked the count to 3-1 on Brewers closer Devin Williams.

To prevent loading the bases, Williams would have to get something over the plate and did he. Alonso launched an 86 mph changeup the other way, over the right-field wall to give the Mets the lead they wouldn’t relinquish.

And Rose had the perfect call.

“Swing and a flyball to right field. Pretty well hit. [Sal] Frelick back, at the wall. He jumps, it’s gone! He did it! He did it!” Rose said. “Pete Alonso with the most memorable home run of his career.”

As radio fans know, there are usually two sides to every call. Legendary Brewers announcer Bob Uecker was on the call and his recounting of events was, understandably, not as enthusiastic.

“And the pitch, hit in the air to right. Deep, warning track and gone,” Uecker said. “Peter Alonso just put New York on top in this one with a three-run home run to right field. And just like that, a 2-0 lead is now a 3-2 deficit. That quickly. Wow.”

The 90-year-old broadcaster has seen his fair share of great moments, but even he was left almost speechless by Alonso’s blast, which sent the Mets to the NLDS and the Brewers — the NL Central champions — to start their offseason.
