Reigning champs get top seeds for Section III’s 2024 tennis team playoffs

Last year’s champions are the No. 1 seeds this year for Section III’s girls’ team tennis tournament in brackets released Thursday.

Quarterfinal competition in three classes is Monday with semifinals the following day and title matches Wednesday at Utica’s John Mott Parkway Tennis Center. Class A Fayetteville-Manlius, Class B Oneida and Class C Cazenovia hold the top seeds as they defend titles they won one year ago.

There are eight teams each competing in class A and B. Class C has 11 with a trio of pigtail matches scheduled for Friday to start the tournament.

Oneida and No. 2 Whitesboro were last year’s Class B finalists, and they are joined in this fall’s field by two more Tri-Valley League teams, No. 4 Camden and No. 6 New Hartford. Oneida, Whitesboro and Camden play at home Monday against Carthage, Fulton and South Jefferson, respectively, while New Hartford travels for its match against Jamesville-DeWitt.

Oneida defeated Whitsboro 5-2 in the championship matchlast fall, playing on its home court because of construction at the Parkway courts.

Whitesboro beat Oneida 4-3 in a Sept. 20 TVL crossover and each enters the tournament with one loss. Whitesboro has it last eight matches since a 4-3 loss to New Hartford at home Sept. 13; the Warriors won Monday’s rematch in New Hartford 6-1.

New Hartford (7-4) had won six consecutive matches before the Whitesboro rematch; the Spartans started the season 1-3, including a loss to Camden. Camden is 11-3 with one loss to Whitesboro and two to Oneida. Jamesville-DeWitt, the No. 3 seed, is 9-3 with two losses to A schools and one outside the section.

The Center State Conference went winless in last year’s tournament but is assured of at least one win this year. Westmoreland, seeded seventh, hosts No. 10 Little Falls in one of Friday’s Class C matches with the winner advancing to play at No. 2 Copenhagen. Manlius-Pebble Hill plays at Skaneateles, and Canastota visits Lowville Academy in the other Friday matches.

Sauquoit Valley is seeded third from the CSC and hosts the winner of the match between Canatota and Lowville Academy.

  • CBA/Liverpool winner vs. Central Square/F-M winner at higher seed, 3:30 p.m.

  • RFA/ES-M winner vs. Auburn/Baldwinsville winner at higher seed, 3:30 p.m.

OCTOBER 9 FINAL
