‘It’s truly surreal.’ Carmel senior sinks hole-in-one in IHSAA girls golf state finals

CARMEL — Sophie Mock says she caught her tee shot on No. 12 “a little thin.”

“I was just hoping it would check up a little bit,” she continues, “but it definitely had the line and I’m just glad it went in the hole.”

Yep. That’s right. The Carmel senior made history Friday becoming the third golfer to record a hole-in-one at the IHSAA girls golf state championship on the 106-yard, par-3 12th at Prairie View Golf Club. She joins Castle’s Hailey Kirkland (2020) and Fishers’ Morgan Lewis (2015) in the exclusive aces club.

“It’s truly surreal. The heart rate was high (and) I was grinning ear-to-ear,” said Mock, who accomplished her historic feat with her pitching wedge. “It was just such a special moment and to have so many loved ones watching it, too, at such an incredible place, it was truly amazing.”

Mock said she “kinda heard” the ball go into the cup, but wasn’t sure if it was just a great shot. “But then everyone was screaming ‘hole-in-one.’ It was awesome.”

It was the second hole-in-one of Mock’s career. She also had one at Newport Country Club in Rhode Island when she was 13, though this one ranks a little bit higher: “A little more high stakes, for sure,” she laughed.

The ace was the highlight of the entire opening round and the exclamation on a blistering start by Mock, who started her day on the back nine with birdie, par, ace.

“There was definitely some adrenaline,” said Mock, who finished the round tied for 12th at +4. “I couldn’t have dreamed of a better start to this round. It felt like a roller coaster, a lot of highs, a lot of lows, but it was pretty great to sit on that high.”

Mock said she took the ball out of play immediately and plans to frame it once she gets home.
