Oct. 4—MATTOON — Batman and Robin.
The Effingham boys golf team has a carbon copy of that in senior Max Seachrist and sophomore Jude Traub. Both showed that on Wednesday at the Class 2A Mattoon Regional at Meadowview Golf Course.
Seachrist and Traub tied each other after 18 holes and decided the victor on the first playoff hole, with Seachrist winning. Both ended up shooting two-under-par 70s.
“My biggest thing today was my mental game, just trying to play every shot and not worry about the big picture,” Seachrist said. “I felt like I did a good job with that today.”
“The other day, it was Leo (Wyckoff) and Cannon (Bockhorn); they stepped up and played their two best rounds ever and when our two main guys are third and fourth and played OK, that’s phenomenal, but they showed up today and led us like they’re supposed to,” head coach Jeff Schafer added. “Max got it working early and Jude just played really solid and had a really strong finish.
“I always say I got one of the best 1-2 combinations to always give us a chance to win a tournament.”
Seachrist shot two-under-par on the front nine. He was four-under heading to the 13th hole. He parred two holes in a row before a bogey on the par-5 15th, a par on the par-4 16th, a bogey on the par-3 17th and a par on the par-4 18th.
Traub was even-par on the front nine. He birdied the par-4 12th hole before a bogey on the par-4 14th, an eagle on the 15th, a bogey on the 16th and a par and birdie on the 17th and 18th holes.
The team ended up shooting a 308.
“I’m just really proud of them. We really played solid all year,” Schafer said. “We’ve had good finishes in every tournament we’ve played in.”
Wyckoff was ninth individually with an 81 and Bockhorn shot an 87.
“He’s played really well all year,” said Schafer of Wyckoff. “He’s won a couple of the nine-hole matches and was low once for us for an 18-hole match. He’s right on the heels and one we definitely need to take a big step forward next year to fill Max’s shoes.”
The scores that didn’t count were Rayden Schneider’s and Brody Boehm’s 89.
Charleston was second with a 321 and Mattoon was third with a 326. Altamont finished 10th with a 398.
Hayden Summers was 28th with a 92. Tyler Ruffner was 45th with a 100, Joel Bauer was 48th with a 102, Evan Elam was 52nd with a 104, Alex Walker was 54th with a 107 and Charlie Goeckner was 58th with a 117.

BOYS GOLF
at St. Anthony … The St. Anthony Bulldogs finished first and the Teutopolis Wooden Shoes second at the Class 1A St. Anthony Regional at Effingham Country Club.
St. Anthony fired a team score of 291. Joey Trupiano, Dakota Flaig and Jack Swingler were tied for second with final rounds of 72 and Maddux Clark shot a 75. The scores that didn’t count were Alec Hakman’s 77 and Ryan Schmidt’s 90.
Teutopolis was second with a 312. Isaac Weber finished first with a 71. Coen Pennington shot a 73. Colin Habing shot an 83 and Hayden Tebbe shot an 85. The scores that didn’t count were Brody Thoele’s 88 and Nolan Schumacher’s 91.
Newton finished fourth with a 347. Gunner James advanced with an 82 and Jack James advanced with an 87. Those who didn’t advance were Michael Kennedy and Grant Fulton (T-26th, 89), Evan Johnson (37th, 93) and Blaine Bergbower (58th, 109).
North Clay also competed but didn’t advance anyone to sectionals. Riley Poe finished 37th with a 93, Brodie Adair finished 61st with a 117, Hunter Czyzewski finished 62nd with a 120 and Jacob M. Arnold finished 64th with a 131.
at Moweaqua (Central A&M) … The Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg Hatchets finished fifth with a final score of 344 at the Class 1A Moweaqua (Central A&M) Regional.
Rylan Rincker and Jacob Vonderheide advanced with final rounds of 81. They both finished tied for ninth. Those who didn’t advance were Blake Owens and Andrew Petzing (T-33rd, 91), Ross McCormick (42nd, 95) and Jack Holland (58th, 105).
SOCCER
at Effingham … The Effingham Flaming Hearts defeated Hillsboro, 2-1, at Klosterman Field at Washington Savings Bank Stadium.
Maicol Sefton had two goals and Peter Rosen had five saves.
“Tonight, we defeated Hillsboro, 2-1, in a challenging and physical match, extending our season record to 14-0,” head coach Logan Arney said. “This ties our all-time wins record that was set last year. I am extremely proud of this team and how we continue to find ways to get wins. This is an extremely rare accomplishment, especially in soccer, which requires the entire team to work together and thin margins often decide games. We are truly making history this year. Tonight’s match was a great match that showed our character and teamwork. We went down 0-1 and fought hard to come back to win.”
BASEBALL
at North Clay … The North Clay Cardinals defeated the South Central Cougars, 3-0, at North Clay High School Baseball Field.
Jack Compton and Cayden Craig each had one hit and one RBI for North Clay. Ben Czyzewski had one hit and Cody Zimdars had one RBI.
Ian Jones pitched and allowed two hits and three walks to six strikeouts in seven innings.
As for South Central, Hudson Moore hit a double and Zane Montes had one hit.
Callaway Smith pitched and allowed three hits, three runs (two earned) and five walks to eight strikeouts in six innings.
