As forecasters watch a tropical depression developing in the Gulf of Mexico, some local governments around Tampa Bay started offering sandbags.
The system could be “at or near major hurricane strength” before landfall, according to an 11 a.m. update from the National Hurricane Center, although the exact track remains uncertain. Tampa Bay could see up to 6 inches of rain over the next several days. The rains could cause flooding in areas that are still saturated and recovering from Hurricane Helene.
Officials note that while sandbags can be an effective tool to prevent minor water intrusion, they do not stop storm surge or major flooding.

Hillsborough County
The following self-serve sandbag sites will be open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, weather permitting:

Two additional self-serve sandbag sites will be open from sunrise to sunset starting Saturday until further notice.

Sand and bags will be restocked daily if weather permits. Residents are advised to bring their own shovels.
