Grand Canyon basketball teams make ‘Lope Vegas’ Midnight Madness splash

Date:

There were campers outside Grand Canyon’s Global Credit Union Arena since a week ago Sunday. The line outside the arena started to get really big by 2 p.m., Friday. The student fans, known as the ”Havocs,” began to pour in at 10:45 p.m. Friday.

And, at the stroke of midnight, the madness began in a purple haze of pumping electro music with an arena filled with 7,000 or so students on their feet as the GCU men’s and women’s basketball players were introduced for the ”Lope Vegas” midnight splash to kick off the season.

The players walked down the aisles. Well, most walked. Guard Collin Moore got a body surfing ride down to the floor from the Havocs.

“The Havocs are the best student section in the country,” GCU women’s coach Molly Miller said in a school video. “I just want to get started right now, this was epic tonight.”

GCU men’s coach Bryce Drew was equally impressed.

“What a great way to start the basketball season,” said Drew, who was dressed in a Vegas-like lounge act purple sequin jacket. “Having all the Havocs there. The energy in our building is better than anywhere in the country.

“The new players got a taste of that tonight.”
