Top performers: Chatham Glenwood’s Ellie Surges remains perfect in CS8 girls tennis

⭐ Game of the Week

CHATHAM GLENWOOD 5, SACRED HEART-GRIFFIN 4: Chatham Glenwood took the top three singles matches and pulled out a pivotal No. 1 doubles match, leading to a 5-4 victory over Sacred Heart-Griffin in a girls dual tennis meet at SHG on Monday.

Glenwood junior Ellie Surges put her perfect Central State Eight Conference record on the line and defeated SHG senior Caroline Sheehan 6-2, 6-0 in the No. 1 singles match.

At No. 2 singles, Samantha Shankland got a point for Glenwood with a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Laney Aleman, while Lydia Ryherd gave the Titans a third singles point by stepping in at No. 3 to post a 5-7, 6-0, 10-5 win over Brooklyn Budd.

Glenwood’s big point came at No. 1 doubles when Kiki Mander and Natalie Alexander edged Brooklyn Budd and Katherine Karns 7-6 (5), 7-5. Surges and Ryherd provided the second doubles point after securing a 6-4, 6-2 win over Sheehan and Aleman at No. 2.

Catalina Mosquera and Lucia Hassebrock kept SHG in striking distance by supplying three team points. Mosquera won her No. 5 singles match 6-1, 6-2 over Kylinn Wood and Hassebrock defeated Alexander 6-2, 6-2 at No. 6. Mosquera and Hassebrock notched a third-set tiebreak win at No. 3 doubles with a 4-6, 6-4, 10-4 triumph over Shankland and Wood.

Karns got the final point for SHG by beating Mander 6-4, 6-3 in the No. 4 singles slot. 

🏌Girls Golf

Izzy Hassebrock/Maddy Johnson, Sacred Heart-Griffin: The tandem just missed the individual Class 1A Rochester Sectional title in a playoff after ending with rounds of 2-over 74 in regulation at Lincoln Greens Golf Course. Carlyle’s Sarah Hyten prevailed as the medalist. The Cyclones, however, came away with the team sectional title by 37 strokes.

Alaina Ervin, Pleasant Plains: The four-time Sangamo Conference champion tied for ninth place at the 1A Rochester Sectional. She fired a 78.

🏌Boys Golf

A.J. Charpentier/Colton Barr, Jacksonville: Charpentier tied for fifth place individually at the University of Illinois Golf Course and the Crimsons missed the team 2A sectional title by just one stroke behind Normal U-High. Charpentier shot 1-over 73, while Barr finished just one stroke behind.

Sam Schwab, Litchfield: The junior missed the individual Class 1A Zeigler-Royalton Sectional title by one stroke. The junior forged a round of even-par 71 behind Effingham St. Anthony junior Jack Swingler.

🏐 Volleyball

Kinley Stolte, Nokomis: Finished with 10 assists, four kills and two service aces to help Nokomis defeat Pawnee 25-11, 25-10 in an MSM Conference match to improve to 21-3 overall and 6-0 in league play.

Meaghan Marshall, Jacksonville Routt: Had eight kills, seven blocks and an ace in a 26-24, 22-25, 25-21 loss to Jacksonville.

Isabella Tiburzi/Braley Wiser, Carlinville: Tiburzi ushered five kills, nine assists, six digs and two aces in a 25-9, 25-11 win over Jerseyville. Wiser also had five kills.
