Danny Green retiring after 15 seasons in the NBA, 3 championships with Spurs, Raptors, Lakers

Date:

After 15 years in the NBA, Danny Green is calling it a career.

Green, 37, played 14 seasons in the NBA with six teams — the Cleveland Cavaliers, San Antonio Spurs, Toronto Raptors, Los Angeles Lakers, Philadelphia 76ers, and Memphis Grizzlies.

“I never imagined writing this letter, even though I knew this day would eventually come,” Green wrote in a statement posted on social media. “My life has revolved around this game, taking me all over the world and introducing me to incredible people. It’s been one helluva journey that I’m immensely proud of, and I couldn’t have achieved it without the support of so many.

“I am who I am because of you, so thank you!

“To all my friends, family, coaches, and teammates from high school, college, and the pros; to my wife and little one, who have pushed me to be not only a great player but a better person each day. I hope I make you proud as I hang up this jersey and sneakers and officially step away from the game.

“I’m excited for the next chapter and look forward to conquering new challenges.”

Green was part of three NBA title-winning teams with the Spurs (2014), Raptors (2019) and Lakers (2020). He is one of four players in league history to win championships with three different teams.

Prior to being a second-round draft pick by the Cavaliers in 2009, Green played four seasons at the University of North Carolina. During his senior season, he started every game that year for the Tar Heels and ended up helping the program win its fifth national title.

On his podcast, Green said that after playing only two games with the Sixers last season before being waived, teams weren’t calling to add him and that’s when he started to realize his career might be over.

Now that his playing days are behind him, Green hopes to move into the media world to continue to be part of the game.
