Residents share photos of Vero Beach destruction from Hurricane Milton, tornadoes

Date:

Following multiple reported tornadoes and the landfall of Category 3 Hurricane Milton, numerous homes, businesses and other properties were damaged or destroyed in Vero Beach and nearby Florida communities.

So far, at least 16 people are confirmed to have died in Florida due to the hurricane, USA TODAY reported. In northern St. Lucie County, homes were destroyed, trees were downed, cars were flipped and at least six people died from a suspected tornado at the Spanish Lakes Country Club Village.

The hurricane made landfall with 120 mph winds Wednesday evening. Schools and businesses were beginning to reopen in the area Friday, but rescuers continue to navigate roads blocked by flooding and uprooted trees, and millions of Floridians remain without power.

National Weather Service teams will be in the area Friday and into the weekend to assess the damage and strength of suspected tornadoes on the Treasure Coast.

Throughout east central Florida, 42 warnings were issued. NWS officials have yet to determine the exact number of twisters that formed on the Treasure Coast.
