Derry City suffered another setback in their hopes for the League of Ireland title as they were held to a 1-1 draw with Sligo Rovers at the Ryan McBride Brandywell Stadium.

The Candystripes dropped points on Friday but had the chance to go top of the table with a win over Sligo who played the last 15 minutes with a player less.

However, a spectacular volley from Connor Malley on 34 minutes stunned the home crowd and meant Derry went in behind at the break.

Early in the second period, City were gifted an equaliser when Reece Hutchinson turned the ball into his own net.

The visitors were reduced to ten men with a quarter of an hour remaining when Luke Pearce was shown a second yellow.

Paul McMullan and Colm Whelan went close for Derry, while Sean Robertson spurned a golden opportunity in injury time to snatch the winner.

Derry have moved up to second, two points behind Shelbourne, with three games to play, including a final-night encounter at home to the current league leaders.
