Faith helps Owen Freeman keep composure in basketball

Date:

DAVENPORT, Iowa (KWQC) – Iowa basketball star Owen Freeman is wise beyond his years.

“He’s a special young guy in so many different ways and he’s incredibly talented but he also recognizes that there’s room for growth” said head coach Fran McCaffery.

It’s leadership Freeman learned from the one he follows.

“I play basketball but for me I’m a child of God so I try to represent him as much as I can and I try to let him shine through me” said Freeman.

It’s why you’ll never hear Freeman say a cuss word.

“I might have slipped up when I was younger but not recently no.”

When Freeman gets frustrated, he expresses himself with a wholesome variety of words.

“Frick’s a big one. What the heck. Dang it. Those are my big ones that I go to.”

Things can get pretty intense on the basketball court for a Division One player, it can bring out all sorts of emotion and yet through it all, Owen Freeman has never said a swear word.

“I’ve tried to get him to say a few and when I was younger I used to be that way but I’ve never hear him never once” said Iowa senior Payton Sandfort.

“It’s very impressive. I know from a personal standpoint that would be pretty hard for me to do so to see that out of him basketball is a competitive game you hear a lot of different things on the court to kind of hold back from that is a really impressive thing” said Iowa sophomore Brock Harding.

Just one of many things Freeman does for the mission he’s called to.

“I feel like I’m the Bible that people read so not everyone’s gonna open the Bible so I gotta shine God’s light through somehow.”

“He’s super religous and that’s something that I really appreciate and it’s helped me grow in my faith” said Sandfort.

“He’s just a great kid, a really nice guy who doesn’t want to do any harm to anyone.”

Owen Freeman’s future is as bright as the light he shines to others.

“The sky’s the limit for him.”
