Bayern Munich icon reminisces bond with Barcelona forward – ‘We had a special connection’

Barcelona and Bayern Munich have met regularly in the UEFA Champions League in recent years and it has always been the German side who have come out on top.

Ever since the 8-2 humiliation in Lisbon, the narrative of Barcelona vs Bayern Munich has taken a whole new definition and the general theme has been for the Spanish side to get outclassed.

Now, however, they are in a great moment and host Bayern while at the peak of their powers. Moreover, there is a special narrative heading into this clash for multiple reasons.

First, it will be special for Hansi Flick to face off against the team he won the sextuple with not so long ago. It will be equally special for Robert Lewandowski who spent the prime of his career as the Bavarians’ marksman.

Speaking to the media ahead of Bayern Munich’s upcoming game against Barcelona, Bayern Munich forward Thomas Muller spoke on the relationship he shared with Robert Lewandowski when the duo shared the dressing room.

“He’s probably the attacking footballer I’ve played with the longest time,” he said, as quoted by SPORT.

“We had a special connection there,” he added.

Muller, however, did away with any romanticism in his relationship with the Polish striker as he insisted that there would be no love lost when they face off on the field midweek.

“On Wednesday there is no connection, we should not be afraid.”

So far this season, Lewandowski has scored twelve goals in eleven appearances for Barcelona and is the current leader of the Pichichi race after a spectacular start to the season.

Muller, meanwhile, has started just two of Bayern’s seven league games and averages 44 minutes per match. In that duration, he has racked up one goal and one assist.
