Aberdeen have signed Danish winger Jeppe Okkels on loan from Preston North End until the end of the season, with an option to make the move permanent as part of the deal.

The 25-year-old spent three years playing under Dons manager Jimmy Thelin at Elfsborg.

The Swedish club sold him to Utrecht in the Netherlands in January 2024, with the player moving on to Preston in the summer.

Okkels started just one match in the Championship, when he was replaced at half-time, while there were six more appearances as a substitute.

He played in three EFL Cup ties and converted two spot-kicks in a 17-16 penalty shootout success against Fulham.

Okkels began his senior career with Silkeborg in his homeland before signing for Thelin’s Elfsborg, where he scored 29 goals in 118 appearances.

He becomes Aberdeen’s first signing of the January window, and Thelin hinted there will be more additions in the coming weeks.

“Jeppe is someone we know well and is a player with a strong pedigree so we are delighted he has opted to join us at Aberdeen,” Thelin said.

“He is a good finisher, who will bring a goal threat and provide real quality to our midfield options with his technical ability.

“He has had a frustrating period, however, he is a good character and with the fight and determination he shows we are sure he will be a positive addition to the squad.

“We continue to look at ways in which we can strengthen the squad to bring more energy for the remainder of the season.”
