Sporting Lisbon’s Viktor Gyökeres was linked to Paris Saint-Germain this past summer. Still, the capital club didn’t make a move for a No. 9. Nonetheless, sporting advisor Luis Campos was asked about pursuing the Swedish star.
The striker played in 50 matches for Sporting last season, scoring 43 goals and recording 15 assists across all competitions. As a result, other clubs besides the Parisians were keen on the player.
Arsenal and Chelsea are among the sides that have been linked to Gyökeres, but why didn’t the reigning Ligue 1 champions push for a move? PSG sporting advisor Luis Campos attended the Thinking Football Summit and was asked about Gyökeres.
PSG and Sporting have an excellent working relationship with past deals involving Nuno Mendes, Pablo Sarabia, and Manuel Ugarte. Nonetheless, Campos notes that they had no interest in pursuing Gyökeres as they were confident in their current players who can play the No. 9 role.
“Could Gyokeres be a good solution for PSG’s attack? We are very happy with Gonçalo Ramos, and he is very happy at the club,” Campos said (h/t Le10Sport). “The coach is also pleased with Asensio.”
“We opted for the solution of continuity. The players need time; they need to adapt to the club, which is very demanding. It is a club that wants to win every match.”
