Cricket doesn’t always provide just deserts, but the longer it last the likelier this becomes. Thus has Australia recaptured the Border-Gavaskar Trophy after eight years, and this summer five hard-fought Tests. A three-Test series would have been damply drawn; a four-Test series might also have ended in stalemate had India shown a hint of application in Melbourne. But after a summer’s watching, three-one feels intuitively like the right outcome, even though it’s worth remembering that it took Jasprit Bumrah’s breakdown yesterday to finally toll the knell on India here.
