WICKET: SMITH IS GONE – ON 9999 RUNS
My word.
A double took Steve Smith to a career tally of 9999 runs in Test cricket and everyone knew it – the SCG was ready to see history made.
Then he edged Prasidh to Jaiswal at gully, and it won’t happen today.
Huge, huge, huge. He’s gone for 4 runs and Australia is 3-58. Still need 104 more runs to win.
This is intense!
Big shout… but Smith survives
Huge shout for lbw on Steve Smith! Prasidh Krishna slaps him on the pads, the Indians go nuts for it but the umpire isn’t interested. Virat Kohli makes the signal – we’re going upstairs…
…and that’s pitching outside off stump. They lose a review. Two left for the match.
Big relief for Australia. He doesn’t look settled so far, Smith, and his wicket is absolutely crucial here.
WATCH: Here’s the Labuschagne dismissal
…yeah, it probably feels like you’ve seen this one before.
WICKET: Labuschagne goes
There’s another one. And a huge wicket. Marnus Labuschagne swipes Prasidh Krishna and Jaiswal gobbles it up at gully – a familiar tale for him. Unnecessary stuff and suddenly there’s a bit of momentum with India.
Here comes Steve Smith…
Australia 2-52 (Labuschagne 6, Khawaja 9*), needs 110 to win
Labuschagne gets off the mark
Marnus Labuschagne is off and racing with runs off consecutive balls: two and then a boundary against Prasidh Krishna, sending a half-volley to the rope down the ground.
But other than that… the runs have dried up a little. At least compared to that opening burst by Konstas (and those gifts from the Indian attack). There’s no rush, of course.
Australia 1-51 (Labuschagne 6*, Khawaja 9*), needs 111 to win
That was bad stuff from Konstas
By Tom Decent
Konstas out slogging is hard to watch. Why? He has such a beautiful technique as it is. Normally compact and composed at the crease. A rush of blood once again, trying to play a hero shot in front of a huge crowd. With no Bumrah, there really was no need. I’m all for players playing their natural game but Konstas doesn’t normally do that. He’s forged a reputation as a “generational talent” through conventional strokes. Very hard to slog from early on and reach triple figures.
The GOAT on ice?
WATCH: How Konstas got out
WICKET: Konstas caught out
Well, there’s the first mis-step. Sam Konstas just tried to slog Prasidh Krishna and he got it all wrong, slicing it high up into the air and holing out to Washington Sundar. He knew it straight away, too.
But he scored 22 runs off only 17 balls and that’s a decent chunk into the run chase…
Australia 1-39 (Konstas 22, Khawaja 5*), needs 123 to win
Add some bad fielding to the mix
Consecutive fours to Sam Konstas – the first somehow going through, or under, Washington Sundar who was there to save the boundary at fine leg. Incredible how many needless runs India have allowed already. The Aussies will be feeling emboldened by this. Couldn’t have been a more perfect way to begin this second innings.
Australia 0-35 (Konstas 18*, Khawaja 5*), needs 127 runs to win
