Barcelona midfield superstar outlines Super Cup ambitions – ‘Will give the team a lot of confidence’

Barcelona will be aiming for a place in the final of the Spanish Super Cup when they take on Athletic Club on Wednesday.

This contest in Saudi Arabia will mark the first of the two semifinals, with Real Madrid taking on Mallorca in the other contest.

Barcelona are heading into the game on the back of a formidable 4-0 win over Barbastro in the Copa Del Rey. But things could get much more difficult against a top-tier side like Athletic.

Pedri talks ahead of Athletic Club clash

Speaking to the club media ahead of this game, Barcelona midfielder Pedri spoke about the prospect of winning the Spanish Super Cup.

The youngster also offered his thoughts on Athletic Club, who have always been a formidable opponent for Barça.

But first, talking about the Spanish Super Cup, Pedri said, “Winning the Super Cup is a very nice title, it comes in the middle of the season, and I think it will give the team a lot of confidence, which is very important to continue competing in the upcoming matches.”

Pedri notably won the Spanish Super Cup during the 2022/23 campaign, beating Real Madrid in the final.

Reminiscing the last win, Pedri said, “I remember the last final very well, especially because I scored a goal, and I also remember the great performance by Gavi, it was amazing.

“I had a lot of fun on the pitch, and also during the celebrations after the match,” he added.

Pedri went on to talk about Athletic Club, who are breathing down Barcelona’s neck, as far as the La Liga standings are concerned.

“Athletic Club have a strong team with great players, so it will be a tough match. It’s true that we beat them this season, and we’re looking to do it again, but this time it will be a completely different match than the ones we’ve played before,” he said.

Athletic Club are currently standing fourth in the league table, just two behind Barcelona.

Boasting one of the strongest defences in La Liga, it will be interesting to see how the Basque outfit plan to neutralise the influence of Pedri in the middle of the park this midweek.
