The Chicago Blackhawks have made a roster move in sending Kevin Korchinski back down to the AHL and recalling Wyatt Kaiser ahead of the team’s game Sunday against the Dallas Stars.
Korchinski will resume his season with the Rockford IceHogs after playing in nine games with the Blackhawks and failing to record a point. He has been skating on the third pairing and is a -5 in those games.
Kaiser played four games in the AHL since being sent down and recorded a point, but his game revolves more around the defensive aspect, not offense. He should fit back in on the third pairing in Chicago for the time being and leave Louis Crevier as the seventh defenseman.
While Korchinski didn’t show amazing stuff with the Blackhawk this time around, he wasn’t bad. He also wasn’t getting enough playing time for his talent. He can experience more winning with Rockford and play top minutes to gain even more confidence before returning to Chicago.
Kaiser has played 28 games for the Blackhawks this season and is a little more NHL-ready. He ranks third on the team with 54 blocked shots, fourth among defensemen on the Blackhawks with 32 shots, and has also recorded 33 hits as well as 1:51 of shorthanded time on ice per game. He is only -4 on the last place Blackhawks.
Both Kaiser and Korchinski should be pieces that Chicago will continue developing in the hopes that they are part of the solution.
