Wheeling Fire Department fire and emergency personnel at 2 p.m. Wednesday responded smoke in a fourth floor apartment set off alarms at the Booker T. Washington Plaza. Firefighters investigated and found a chair on fire in one of the apartments, according to Philip Stahl, public information for the city of Wheeling.
One person was transported to the hospital. Those living in nearby apartments were evacuated, while others in the building were told to shelter in place, he said. First responders remained on-site throughout the afternoon to provide ventilation, assist residents, and control traffic.
The cause remains under investigation.
