Boonsboro junior Piper Meredith shot her best round ever — a 3-under 69 — to win her second Maryland District 1 Class 2A-1A girls golf championship at Black Rock on Monday.
“It’s so surreal. I’m still processing it,” Meredith said.
The Warriors also qualified for the state tournament as a team, finishing fourth out of 15 2A-1A teams with 335 strokes. States will be held at the University of Maryland golf course from Oct. 28-30.
Meredith won the District 1 2A-1A girls title with an 84 as a freshman, then finished fourth at states. Last year, she placed second in District 1 with a 73 and finished sixth at states.
On Monday, she carded birdies on the fifth and seventh holes to shoot 1 under on the front nine, then had a stretch of three straight birdies on holes 11-13 on the way to a 2-under back nine.
The key to her success? “Definitely mental,” Meredith said. “If I make a bad shot, I move on to the next one. My confidence has improved.”
“She has consistency and confidence in her game and her shots,” said Warriors coach John Miller. “She doesn’t let one bad shot or one bad hole ruin her round. She regroups and lives to play the next hole.”
Meredith’s goal at states is simple: “We’re going for the whole thing,” she said. “Knowing the course, I trust myself and I’m more aware of where my shot placements should be, of the holes I can attack and the holes I should be more conservative on.”
“You cannot count her out,” Miller said. “If you’re going to bet on anyone, you’re going to bet on Piper.”

Kadan Jones (79), Trenten Spencer (93) and Nate Montgomery (94) rounded out Boonsboro’s scoring foursome, who will play at states in three weeks. Each will be looking to improve on Monday’s rounds, played in gusty wind conditions.
Jones finished ninth in the Class 2A-1A boys individual standings a year ago.
“It’s a clean slate on an even playing field,” Miller said. “We’ll make sure we get them down there and get a practice round in — at least one.”
South Carroll’s Patrick Carl shot a 69 to win the 2A-1A boys district title, and the Cavaliers also won the team title with 298 strokes.
District 1 Class 4A-3A individual champions were Manchester Valley’s Jackson Streett (boys, 71) and Urbana’s Claire Son (girls, 69). Manchester Valley won the team title with 314 strokes.

South Hagerstown finished sixth in the 4A-3A team standings with 366 strokes. The Rebels’ scoring four were Luke Leisinger (83), Zeke Myers (88), RJ Liriano (96) and Jack Rhodes (99).
North Hagerstown placed seventh in 4A-3A. The Hubs’ scoring four were Colt Tucker (90), Tristan Stiffler (96), Delaney Fuss (99) and Ethan Jennings (99).
In Class 2A-1A, Williamsport finished 13th with 406 strokes, led by Kingston Doan (89) and Ryan Dimmick (91). Smithsburg placed 14th with 413 strokes, led by Daniel Partlow (93). Clear Spring finished 15th with 426 strokes, led by Owen Brooks (101).
