Cricket has produced plenty of intense rivalries over the years in its 147 years of history. One of the most famous of them all is the rivalry between England and Australia, renowned as The Ashes. But in recent years, another rivalry has captured the attention of cricket fans, putting it at par with the The Ashes – the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) played between India and Australia.
The Test series between the two cricketing powerhouses has been christened as the Border-Gavaskar Trophy since 1996 and produced many memorable moments for the cricket fans.
If we look at the stats, the teams have played 56 Test matches as part of the BGT. India have a slight edge over the Aussies in terms of the overall numbers, winning 24 against 20 losses with 12 matches ending in draws.

  • Overall records — Total matches – 56 | India won 24 | Australia won 20 | Draws 12

Home Advantage
As expected the numbers tell different stories in the home venues for both the teams. Australia won the majority of their matches Down Under, and likewise Team India at its home.
Incidentally, both the teams have registered similar numbers of wins at their opponents’ den. Both Australia and India have six away wins in the BGT.
The overall numbers are in India’s favour because of their superior win numbers at home. India have won 18 of the 29 matches played at home in the series. Whereas, Australia has 14 victories from 27 matches at home in Australia.

  • BGT records in India – Total matches 29 | Indian won 18 | Australia won 6 | Draws 5
  • BGT records in Australia – Total matches 27 | India won 6 | Australia won 14 | Draws 7

India’s Dominance in BGT
It’s not only about winning more matches for India in the BGT, they also have won more series over Australia.
Out of the 16 BGT series so far, India have won 10 of them, both home and away, while Australia have managed to beat their opponents in five series. Only one series has ended in a draw, highlighting the contest as more result oriented in line with today’s cricket.
The next series is scheduled to start later this year in November, with India aiming to make it five series wins on the trot. In fact they have won the last two away series Down Under, and will be aiming for a hat-trick of BGT wins there.

  • BGT series results summary – 16 series | India won 10 | Australia won 5 | Draw 1
