After every week of boys golf season, Cape Cod Times high school sports reporter Allen Gunn will select his Cape & Islands starting eight team with how they would line up on his card.
Several golfers have already impressed with low rounds which were crucial to securing a win or played with serious consistency, which goes a long way toward a team’s success.
Whichever direction, the talent has risen to the top, while new names have emerged.
Here are his selections following the first week of action across the Cape. Do you agree? Let him know who you think missed out.
Pairing 1
Ben Catalano, Cape Cod Academy
Catalano fired an impressive 35 (E) at the Ridge Club to start the season and earn medalist honors. He is one of the players to watch on Cape Cod Academy for a reason, and he will need to maintain consistency if the Seahawks want to pick up wins in an extremely tough Atlantic Division.
Colin Gleason, Barnstable
It’s no surprise that Gleason has had one of the strongest starts of anyone on Cape. He averaged 37.5 per nine holes in five matches, with Barnstable seemingly on course every day so far. His one-under 34 against perennial power BC High earned him co-medalist honors.
Pairing 2
Casey Huse, Monomoy
Huse was medalist in Monomoy’s victory at the tough Dennis Pines layout to start the year with a round of two-over 38. The Sharks have three guys that have the potential to post a low score and Huse is at the forefront of that effort alongside Jackson Rocco and Braden Burke.
Sam Scioletti, St. John Paul II
St. John Paul II is looking for guys (and girls) to fill the void left by the departure of players from last season’s team. Scioletti’s start will give head coach Geoff Converse reason to believe that another Lighthouse Division championship won’t be far out of reach with his consistency on course. He’s posted two rounds of 39 and was the medalist in the win over Nantucket at Hyannisport.
Pairing 3
Jack Martin, Nauset
Martin started the year with an uncharacteristic seven-over 42 against Barnstable, where he felt he didn’t really hit one bad shot. But golf is all about the next shot and the next round, and he was five strokes better two days later to earn medalist honors back on home turf at Captains Golf Course. He’s averaging 39.5 shots per nine holes thus far.
Cam Levesque, Barnstable
Having watched Levesque navigate Hyannis Golf Course, it goes without question that he’s got serious game. He posted a 40 against Nauset, which wasn’t far off being the low round of the day and he then shot an even par 35 in a win over Sandwich. Barnstable — with six new guys to the varsity squad and a tough schedule ahead — will be relying on him to be a one-two punch with Gleason in the first group out.
Pairing 4
Logan Miller, Nauset
Miller rescued Nauset in the opening match of the season when he posted a three-over 38 to earn medalist honors from the third pairing out on course. He followed that up with a counting score of 42 against Falmouth. The junior is averaging a flat 40 this season through two rounds. Everyone is looking at those first two groups, but it’s so important to have depth that can consistently post a positive counting score. Miller has shown he can be that guy after being in and out of the squad a season ago.
Christopher Morin, Cape Tech
Morin posted a solid 41 for Cape Tech to help deliver an emphatic 6.5-2.5 victory over Westport. The freshman has got the ability to go lower and he’ll need to with a string of tough matches coming up.
