Breaking: WVU Basketball Player Decides to Take Redshirt Year

Date:

The day after the WVU basketball program experiences its first win of the Darian DeVries era, a player reveals a personal decision. Ofri Naveh, the lone scholarship carryover player from the 2023-24 season under Josh Eilert, has decided to take a redshirt year.

Naveh, who did not play in West Virginia’s 87-59 win over Robert Morris on Monday night, announced the news Tuesday afternoon. In his statement on social media, Naveh explained he made this decision prior to the season opener and feels it’s in the best interest of his development.

“I love WVU and feel incredibly grateful to be a part of this team. Though I won’t be on the court, I’m fully committed to working hard, pushing my teammates and supporting our program in every way I can. I’ll continue to challenge myself and the guys at practice, preparing us all to make this season special. Thank you for your support,” said Naveh.

Naveh joined West Virginia’s program in August of 2023 under former interim head coach Josh Eilert. Naveh has a connection with ex-assistant Da’Sean Butler, who helped recruit him at the time. The 6-foot-6 forward from Israel played in 24 games and started in seven of those for the Mountaineers. Naveh averaged 2.6 points and 2.5 rebounds in 13.8 minutes his freshman year.

In May, Naveh returned to WVU instead of entering the transfer portal like the other with eligibility remaining.
