BYU Fall semester started after Labor Day, and since then BYU has begun practices post-summer and coaches have already hit the recruiting trail. The day after the “quiet” period ended, Kevin Young and 3 of his assistants got on a private jet and visited 3 time zones in one day.
Note a huge notebook this time. but have some updates in BYU recruiting.
Kevin Young and 3 Assistants Visit Priority 2025 recruits
Utah Prep
The college basketball “quiet period” ended when the clock struck midnight on September 4, and Kevin Young and 3 assistants — Chris Burgess, John Linehan, and Brandon Dunson — boarded a private plane to make 3 visits in 3 time zones all in one day. Coaches started the day by visiting Utah Prep basketball practice in Hurricane, Utah. The #1 recruit in the 2025 class AJ Dybantsa was obviously a priority along with 4-star point guard JJ Mandaquit, both of whom will take an official visit to BYU the weekend of October 12. BYU has also offered 2026 Utah Prep 4-star guards Anthony Felesi and Junior County.
Xavion Staton
After Utah Prep, coaches made the short flight to Las Vegas to have lunch with 4-star big man Xavion Staton. Staton told me he had a great visit with the coaches and that he has a great relationship with them. Staton is visiting BYU the weekend of November 2. I consider BYU one of the top 2 or 3 schools in his recruitment.
Caleb Wilson
The day ended with BYU flying to Atlanta to visit 5-star forward Caleb Wilson in his home. Kevin Young is from the Atlanta area, Linehan was an assistant at Georgia from 2019-2022, and Brandon Dunson has recruited Wilson for years now going back to his time at Stanford. Schools such as Arkansas, Kentucky, Alabama, and Auburn are all players in Caleb’s recruitment, but BYU has absolutely put themselves in the conversation. I expect Caleb’s official visit date to BYU to be made public soon.
Mihailo Boskovic Commits to BYU, is in Provo
September 4 was a busy day for BYU basketball. Boskovic made his commitment to BYU official that day. The 6-foot-10 Serbian forward is a late addition to this year’s roster and has an intriguing skill set that I expect will get him on the floor quickly. I spoke to Boskovic on why he decided to commit to BYU.
“I decided to commit because it’s a great project, and BYU has much potential basketball wise. I heard of how great of a place it is and I think I made the right choice! I would describe my game as modern and fun to watch. I like to run in transition, shoot from everywhere and play fast paced. I was also talking with a few other schools.”
Boskovic arrived in Provo last Wednesday and went on to tell me that he will begin practicing with the team today (9/9) after getting his classes and apartment situation in order the last few days. When I spoke with Boskovic last Wednesday and he told me I could break his commitment story, he was in the air flying from Serbia to Salt Lake City. Needless to say he’s had a busy last few days. I don’t know when BYU will officially announce his signing but I’d imagine it will be any day.
It’s too early for me to say if Boskovic will start this year, but he will absolutely have a role. He is a 22 year old freshman that is the same age as a fifth-year senior. I see the four as his best position and gives BYU a true stretch four that can also protect the rim. Boskovic had plenty of opportunities to continue playing in Europe, and he wouldn’t have come to Provo at this stage of his life if he didn’t think he was going to have an impact and develop his game.
Khadim Mboup
6-foot-9 Senegal forward Khadim Mboup committed to BYU two months ago. At the time Khadim was BYU’s 13th and final scholarship. What does Boskovic’s commitment mean for Khadim?
As recently as this weekend, sources tell me that BYU is still trying to bring Khadim in. I’m told admissions have been painfully slow, but within the last few weeks there has been optimism that Khadim would be admitted and join the team. The add/drop deadline for BYU fall semester is September 11, and as time goes on it will be harder for Khadim to join. If Khadim does join, I don’t expect him to have much of a role on this year’s team and to be a developmental piece. He turns 18 this month and is still raw, although he has huge upside with his athleticism and size at the wing. This is my opinion, but if he joins I think he would be a redshirt candidate.
BYU has put plenty of NIL into this team, so one player walking on with BYU’s low tuition rate would be pocket change for boosters.
