Mangone, an overage forward from Sault Ste. Marie has spent the last four seasons playing for the Saginaw Spirit. In 194 games, he scored 61 goals and added 104 assists for a total of 165 points.

This year, Mangone has eight goals and 13 helpers in just 18 games. If he maintains his current pace he will set personal highs in goals, assists and points.

The slippery forward is a proven scorer with great agility and passing instincts. As one of the members of Saginaw’s Memorial Cup winning team last season, he also bring his winning experience to Lake Superior.

Mangone’s commitment comes just days after Kitchener Rangers’ goaltender Jackson Parsons announced his commitment to Clarkson University for the 2025-26 season.

Both Mangone and Parsons were overage players in their last year of OHL eligibility.

At 5-foot-9 Mangone went undrafted during his OHL career and in a world where the NCAA rules never changed, his path towards the NHL would likely be finished.

By joining Lake Superior Mangone buys himself more time to develop. While he continues to play hockey, he will also start a degree at Lake Superior and continue his education. It is easy to see why this could become a prevalent option for overage players.

Mangone’s commitment could be the first of many to come. There could easily be a wave of commitments in the coming days and weeks as more overage players take advantage of the new ruling.
