Canadiens: Big Bounce Back For Mailloux

Date:

The Montreal Canadiens’ AHL affiliate Laval Rocket kicked off its regular season with a big win last night and it was all thanks to Logan Mailloux. The 31st overall pick at the 2021 draft was obviously disappointed when he was cut from training camp, but he didn’t wallow in self pity.

In a 5-2 win over the Providence Bruins, Mailloux scored a pair of goals and added an assist for good measure, finishing his night with a plus-three rating. This is the kind of performance that will ensure his name is the first one that comes to mind if (more likely when let’s face it) the Canadiens need to call someone up.

Mailloux didn’t have a bad camp, but he didn’t stand out, he didn’t attract the attention. He played it safe and it wasn’t enough to steal someone’s chair. So far though, the way Lane Hutson has been playing, the Canadiens could some time this season, start thinking about trading a veteran.

In the win, both Filip Mesar and Adam Engstrom scored their first AHL career goal. It was Mesar’s fourth career game with Laval and his second point as he had registered an assist last season. He also picked up a couple of helpers on the night. As for Engstrom, he found the back on the net in his very first game.

In net, Dobes was solid to sign his first win of the season and he wasn’t the only masked man to have a good night in the organization. Jacob Fowler pitched a 24-save shutout in the NCAA with Boston College. While we’re on the NCAA topic though, might as well add Michael Hage had himself a two-goal game for Michigan.
