Chelsea Face Crystal Palace, Newcastle Competition for PSG Target

As the summer transfer window was closing, Paris Saint-Germain made a final push to strengthen their defense.

In August, L’Équipe’s Loïc Tanzi reported that PSG offered Tomás Araújo a €5 million annual contract but were waiting to sell a center back before moving forward.

Similarly, transfer expert Fabrizio Romano noted that Chelsea had Araújo on their radar as a potential target if they let go of a defender in the final days of the window. While Chelsea hadn’t made a formal bid, they viewed Araújo as a promising option.

Both clubs were interested in the 22-year-old, but Benfica had no plans to sell. Romano reported that the Portuguese club ultimately decided to keep Araújo, having already sold several players over the summer.

According to the Portuguese outlet O Jogo, the Blues are reportedly among several clubs interested in the player, including Newcastle and Crystal Palace.

Last month, CaughtOffside reported that Chelsea are eyeing two young defenders from Benfica—Antonio Silva and Araújo—to bolster their backline.

Araújo, who’s under contract with Benfica until 2028 and has made eight appearances across competitions, gives the Portuguese club strong leverage in any transfer talks with potential suitors.
