LA VERNE, CALIFORNIA – One of the best high school basketball tournaments on the West Coast tipped off Thursday at Damien High School in La Verne, California — the Classic at Damien.

The event boasts eight divisions, 128 teams and 256 games over four days. The stretch of high-level hoops is highlighted by the Platinum Division, which includes top-ranked teams like St. John Bosco, Redondo Union, La Mirada, Santa Margarita, and Eastvale Roosevelt, which just won the Tarkanian Classic in Las Vegas before Christmas.

The best story of the day came from the Gold Division, when Arizona Prescott’s Uriah Tenette dropped 54 points in an overtime win over Chatsworth. Alijah Arenas had a tournament record 56 …

QUARTERFINALS

La Mirada 82, Redondo Union 72: Gene Roebuck and Julien Gomez hit back-to-back 3s late in the game to secure a quality victory that could factor into the Open Division playoffs later this season. Roebuck finished with 28 points — Gomez had 21.

Hudson Mayes had 23 points and SJ Madison added 16 for Redondo Union.

St. John Bosco 52, Heritage Christian 43: Elzie Harrington had 21 points and Christian Collins added 15 for SJB. Tae Simmons led HCS with 18 points.

Layton Christian 59, Sandra Day O’Conner 43: Layton Christian will play in the semifinal on Saturday at 8:30 p.m. UNLV commit Tyrin Jones has been playing a terrific tournament.

Roosevelt 90, Clovis North 58: Brayden Burries led all scorers with 33 points. Issac Williamson had 16.

Campbell Hall 71, Village Christian 63: Vikings advance to Gold Division semifinal.

Crespi 64, Dublin 59: Peyton White led the Celts with 19 points. Malakai Perrantes added 13 in the win.

Anaheim/Canyon 80, Inglewood 70: Brandon Benjamin paced Canyon with 26, and Staf Yilmazturk had 24. Jason Crowe Jr. had 33 for Inglewood.

Ironwood (AZ) 60, Rolling Hills Prep 49: Nick Welch Jr, had 27 points and seven rebounds in the loss.

OTHER SCORES

Prescott (AZ) 93, Chatsworth 87 (OT): Alijah Arenas scored 56 points for Chatsworth, but it wasn’t enough as Prescott’s Uriah Tenette scored 54 points in an overtime victory.
