Connor McCaffery Lands at Butler

Date:

Connor McCaffery has his first college coaching job.

The former Iowa guard and son of Hawkeyes coach Fran McCaffery was announced on Monday as a new assistant coach on Thad Matta’s staff at Butler.

McCaffery will join his brother Patrick, another former Iowa player, who transferred to Butler in the offseason to play his final year of eligibility. Jack McCaffery, the youngest of the McCaffery brothers who is a senior at Iowa City West High School this season, has committed to Butler for next season.

Connor McCaffery was the basketball development coordinator for the NBA’s Indiana Pacers since the beginning of the 2023-24 season. His role involved running the scout team, assisting with video operations and scouting reports, in addition to working out with the active roster. The Pacers advanced to the NBA Eastern Conference Finals last season after missing the playoffs the previous year.

McCaffery replaces former Ohio State standout Greg Oden, who resigned to focus on his business interests outside of coaching.

“Following a high-level playing career, Connor has had the opportunity to both contribute and learn alongside one of the best staffs in the NBA,” Matta said in a statement. “Those experiences will be very valuable to our staff. He obviously comes from a basketball family that I know very well and I’m excited for the impact he is going to have on our program both quickly and in the long run.”

McCaffery played in 166 games in his career at Iowa, the second most in program history. He was involved in 111 wins, tying Jordan Bohannon for most wins in program history. McCaffery had a career assist-to-turnover ratio of 3.59, ranking second in NCAA history.
